The architectural renovation of Building 707, a historic multi-purpose maintenance shop originally built in 1935, focused on preserving the building's historical character while upgrading its functionality and efficiency. The exterior renovations included replacing the deteriorating glass windows with energy-efficient alternatives and repairing the poor drainage around the building to prevent flooding. While the roof was recently replaced and did not require further work, the façade required minor adjustments, such as the installation of new metal panels and the removal of the mechanical area along the façade. Additionally, all exterior doors were replaced to match the building's existing aesthetic, and a new ADA-compliant entrance was added.
Interior renovations were extensive, addressing the building's five main areas. In Area 1, the main maintenance space, a new concrete slab replaced the existing pit cover, and the floor was prepared for an epoxy coating. The existing office space was converted into a waiting area, with two new offices adjacent to it. In Area 2, the chain-link fence and unused railway tracks were removed, and storage was relocated to Area 3, which also houses a new weapons repair and maintenance office and a secure parts storage vault. Area 4 included the renovation of the men's restroom to ADA standards and updates to the break room and office spaces. Area 5 serves as a Mechanical and Fire Pump Room converted from the existing Boiler Room, with the chimney capped to prevent water penetration.
Overall, the renovation of Building 707 modernized the facility while retaining its historical significance. The upgrades improved the building's functionality for its users, ensuring it remains a valuable asset until a new facility is built. The thoughtful integration of modern materials and designs, combined with the preservation of key historical elements, demonstrates a balance between respecting the building's past and preparing it for future use.
