The architectural work on Mellon Hall at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, involved several carefully planned renovations to both the interior and exterior of the historic building. The project aimed to enhance the quality and functionality of the spaces while respecting Richard Neutra’s original design intent. This was achieved by integrating modern technologies, such as insulated glazing and LED lighting, and using compatible materials like new terrazzo and veneer wood panels that complemented the historic character of Mellon Hall.
Interior renovations within Mellon Hall focused on updating finishes and creating improved student gathering spaces. Key areas like the Conversation Room, Lobby, Fishbowl, and Music Library were revitalized to provide better environments for students and faculty. A significant upgrade was made to the building’s circulation spine, which included the addition of a new stair, improving movement and connectivity throughout Mellon Hall.
The project also addressed the need for new restroom facilities by replacing the existing auditorium toilet rooms with modernized restrooms at the south end of the building. These new toilet rooms were designed to meet current accessibility standards and provide a much-needed upgrade to the existing amenities. The combined renovations within Mellon Hall successfully enhanced the building’s functionality and comfort while preserving its historic significance, ensuring that it continues to serve the campus community effectively for years to come.
